Mushrooms and Conks at the Base of a Tree: What Fungal Growth Is Telling You
Mushrooms and shelf-like conks at the base of a tree are rarely random. They often signal decay in the roots or lower trunk. Here is how to read fungal growth and decide what to do about it.

Finding mushrooms pushing up through the soil at the foot of a tree, or hard shelf-shaped growths fixed to the bark of the lower trunk, tends to worry homeowners, and it should get your attention. What you are seeing is the fruiting body of a fungus, the reproductive structure that releases spores. The mushroom or conk itself is just the visible tip of something much larger, a network of fungal threads that has been living and feeding somewhere in or on the tree for a while. The key question is not whether the fungus is there, but what it has been eating.
Not all fungi at the base of a tree are a problem. Many mushrooms that pop up in lawns and mulch are simply breaking down dead organic matter in the soil, old roots, buried wood, or the mulch itself, and they have nothing to do with the living tree. These are a normal, even healthy, part of soil life. The fungi that matter for tree safety are the ones that decay living wood, especially the structural wood in the root flare and lower trunk. When those appear, the fruiting body on the outside is a sign that decay is already underway on the inside.
Location is the single most important clue. A mushroom growing twenty feet from the trunk out in the lawn is usually unrelated to the tree's structure. A cluster of mushrooms emerging right at the root flare, or directly from a major surface root, suggests the fungus is decaying that root. A hard conk attached to the lower trunk is more concerning still, because many trunk-decay fungi produce woody, perennial conks that persist year after year, and their presence often means decay has been advancing inside the trunk for several seasons. The closer the fruiting body is to the load-bearing base of the tree, the more seriously it should be taken.
The reason root and butt decay is so dangerous is that it attacks exactly the parts of the tree that hold it upright. A tree can tolerate a surprising amount of decay in the upper canopy and keep standing, but the root flare and lower trunk are the foundation. As decay hollows or softens that wood, the tree loses its anchorage and its ability to resist bending loads. Unlike a dead branch you can see and remove, this damage is hidden underground or inside the trunk, which is why a tree weakened by root decay can fail in a storm while still looking full and green on top. The canopy is not always a reliable guide to what is happening at the base.
There are observations you can make yourself before calling anyone. Note where the fruiting bodies are, how many there are, and whether they are soft annual mushrooms or hard woody conks. Photograph them with something for scale, and check back over the following weeks. Look at the surrounding signs as well: bark that is cracked, sunken, or peeling near the base; soil that is heaved or cracked on one side of the trunk; a recent lean; or fine roots that appear dead when you brush back the surface. Any combination of fungal fruiting bodies plus those structural signs raises the priority considerably.
What you should not do is assume the fungus can be cured by removing the mushrooms or applying a treatment. Pulling off the conks does nothing to the decay inside, and there is no spray that reverses wood decay once it is established. The real question a professional is answering is not how to kill the fungus but how much sound wood is left and whether the tree can still safely hold itself up. That assessment may involve sounding the trunk with a mallet, probing, or in higher-stakes cases specialized decay-detection tools that estimate how much of the cross-section remains solid.
The outcome of that assessment varies widely. Some trees with minor, slow decay can be monitored on a schedule and kept for years, sometimes with weight reduction in the canopy to lower the load on a compromised base. Others, where decay has consumed too much of the structural wood beneath a target like a house or a frequently used area, are genuinely hazardous and warrant removal before they fail on their own terms. The point of identifying the fungus early is to make that a planned decision rather than an emergency.
If you notice mushrooms at the root flare or conks on the lower trunk of a tree, especially a large one near anything you care about, treat it as a signal worth investigating rather than a curiosity to ignore. Fungal fruiting bodies at the base are one of the clearest visible warnings a tree gives that something structural is going on underneath, and a timely professional evaluation is the difference between a managed plan and a surprise failure.
