How To Prepare Your Trees for Spring Storm Season

Spring storms can turn weak limbs and unstable trees into property damage overnight. Here is how to get your trees ready before severe weather arrives.

How To Prepare Your Trees for Spring Storm Season

Spring is one of the most active weather seasons of the year. High winds, heavy rain, and sudden thunderstorms all put extra pressure on trees that may already be carrying winter damage, weak unions, or branches that grew too long during the previous season. A short prep window now can prevent emergency tree service calls later.

Start with a slow walk around the property. Look up into the canopy for hanging limbs, snapped branches still caught in the tree, large dead sections, and unbalanced growth that leans heavily over a roof, fence, driveway, or play area. Branches that look small from the ground can weigh hundreds of pounds and cause real damage when they finally break.

Next, check the trunk and base. Cracks in the trunk, peeling bark in unusual patterns, mushrooms or fungus near the root flare, and soil that looks lifted or disturbed can all be signs of internal decay or root instability. Trees with these signs are the most likely to fail during a storm and should be assessed by a tree care professional before the next system rolls through.

Targeted spring trimming is one of the most effective storm preparations. Removing deadwood, reducing overextended limbs, and thinning dense canopies allows wind to move through the tree instead of pushing against a solid wall of branches. This dramatically lowers the chance of major limb failure during gusty conditions and also helps the tree recover more cleanly after the storm passes.

For trees that are already showing structural problems, the safer path is sometimes full removal rather than waiting for the next storm to make the decision. An arborist can help weigh the risk against the cost, plan access for the crew, and clear the work area without damaging surrounding landscaping. Getting in front of spring storm season is almost always less expensive and less disruptive than reacting to it.
